Artist Statement

My drawings begin without a predetermined destination. Rather than working from a fixed image or narrative, I allow each piece to develop through a process of observation, repetition, and intuition. Thousands of individual graphite marks gradually build into interconnected forms that evolve as the drawing unfolds, revealing relationships that often surprise me as much as the viewer.

I am fascinated by the tension between order and spontaneity. Repeated patterns establish structure, while subtle variations introduce movement and unpredictability. As layers accumulate, recognizable forms emerge and dissolve, inviting multiple interpretations rather than a single conclusion. I want each drawing to reward sustained attention, revealing new details, connections, and visual experiences each time it is viewed.

Graphite is an ideal medium for this exploration. Its range of value, precision, and subtlety allows me to create surfaces that shift with changing light, distance, and perspective. What may first appear abstract often becomes organic, architectural, or atmospheric as the eye continues to explore. The work asks viewers to slow down, engage with the drawing, and discover their own pathways through its complexity.

My perspective has been shaped by more than three decades working closely with significant works of art as Chief Preparator at the Joslyn Art Museum. Spending countless hours installing, studying, and caring for artworks across centuries and disciplines has deepened my appreciation for craftsmanship, material, and the quiet power of close observation. While those experiences have informed my practice, my drawings are ultimately driven by a personal curiosity about perception—how we recognize patterns, construct meaning, and continually see familiar things in new ways.

Each drawing is an invitation to look beyond the immediate image. Through careful mark-making and an openness to discovery, I hope to create work that encourages contemplation, rewards curiosity, and reveals something new with every viewing.
